I, too am a professional PT and also Pilates Instructor (freestyle), with a bad back! Grrr - I went through hell for 18m where muscles went into spasm. Somehow I managed to keep all my classes/gym going. It literally came on over night. I've spent HUNDREDS on various therapies, only to be told (supposedly definitively), that it is wear and tear of the facet joints. (X ray). I STILL don't believe it. Maybe I am in denial! I MUST get it all properly assessed. I spend a lot of the day in standing - so that comment resonated with me. Great stuff Mike.
Hope yours clears up soon. PS Trigger point therapy was excellent but did not last long for me.

I totally agree!! Being predisposed to a certain condition is not a life sentence. It means you have to work harder to overcome that predisposition. Unfortunately, in our society today most people just accept the "fact" that they are doomed to be whatever they have been pre-diagnosed with. It's sad!!

Hey Tim

Absolutely. I was pleasently surprised when the scientists attributed it to lifestyle factors. As obvious as it sounds to me and you, the cycnic in me suggested they would want to make a name for themselves by attributing it 100% to genes and they had the answer.
Instead it was use a simple solution to a simple problem. Doesn't mean it's easy but with you, me and the rest we can change attitudes, beliefs and perceptions on what it takes.

Governments would also save money in the process but that's a different topic altogether.

I agree that this must be an extreme case, and we must do more to educate the public. I believe Obesity is a disease and that genetics play a major role in it, but lifestyle is the ultimate predictor. You have to diligently watch what you eat and what you do in order to overcome these so called "Fat-genes". As you correctly stated, they do not "Garuantee" Obesity. Your lifestyle is what makes or breaks you on that front. Keep up the GREAT posts!!

Hi Mike,

When someone says: “What if I try and then things come up, I lose track and fail” - whatever you say won't be good enough.

So ask them: I don't know .. “What if you try and then things come up, you lose track and fail” .... [answer] .. OK and how likely is that? 7/8/9 out of 10?

.. Right and if 4 wks pass, and you've taken no action, what difference will that make?

If you get a high score to the first question and a muted response to the 2nd - say you're right, that's what will happen.

But when you're ready to really make a go of it - call me, I'll be ready to give you the necessary support, direction and motivation.

Hi Mike,

I remember from my skool physics days - energy can neither be created nor destroyed!

So like your article because it's put healthy living into perspective. Its pays to be in tune with your body - to know not only what you can take out - but also when you need to put back in.
